The Year all Wrapped Up

Dear Reader,

As the year progressed I have become a more mature and better writer. I have learned many techniques to use any many fallacies not to use. In college next year i will be able to help out friends and peers. This class has been very helpful because it has improved my quality of work. By improving the work that I produced, the reader will be more entertained with reading pieces of writing.
This year we wrote essays in four major categories . Those four major categories are narrative, expository, descriptive and persuasive. Each piece has their own respective purpose. The narrative's purpose is to tell a story. The story can be told in first, second, or third person. Each way can be used to write a successful paper. Narrative pieces of writing also
include conflict, setting, characters, a plot, a climax, and a theme. To have a successful writing piece one must use these pieces to the best of their ability.
The next category of writing we executed was the expository piece. The expository piece's main goal is to inform the reader about something the writer is trying to show them a side of an event, person or thing. Expository writing can be shown in different types of writing such as: definition, compare and contrast, cause and effect and classification or division. Compare and
contrast can happen in two ways. One way is point by point and the other is subject by subject. "My sister is built like an athlete.
She ran track as well as played field hockey. These two sports include conditioning and eye hand coordination. To play sports of this kind one must have a lot of skill in a certain type of area. Field hockey isn’t like track but they both need special skills to play and it requires an athlete to play them.
I also have the athletic body type, however I play two completely different sports. The sports that play take a different type of athlete but they still take a very demanding person. These two sports can be very difficult on ones body." This is an example of subject by subject. I am happy with the way this paper turned out because of the two different ways of getting the
same point across to the reader.
The third type of writing we performed this year was descriptive. The purpose of descriptive writing is to describe an item, event or person. In order to do this one must use descriptive details commonly known as sensory details. These sensory details go along with other techniques such as word choice, figurative language, vivid verbs, colorful adjectives, proper nouns, dialogue and using the technique show don't tell. The best descriptive papers include a dominant impression showing that there is a certain trait that connects the paper. The reader should know the dominant impression without the writer telling them blatantly what the dominant impression is. I opened my descriptive paper by defining what the item was that I was writing about. 'The lanyard is “any of various small cords or ropes for securing or suspending something, as a whistle about the neck or
a knife from one's belt.”' "The Good, The Bad, The Lanyard" was one of the best papers that I wrote this year. I am especially happy in the way that the history fit itself in and that the paper went in chronological order. Many of the techniques that I used I would love to use again. The only concern that I had for this paper was the repetition. It can be hard to think of new things to
say about a lanyard.
The final type of writing we learned about this year in College Composition was persuasive writing. The main reason people write persuasively is to convince someone towards a certain side of an argument. The writer must use at least one of the five appeals. The five appeals are appeal to principle, appeal to authority, appeal to character, appeal to emotion and appeal to logic. These five appeals can be fit into three categories; Ethos, Pathos and Logos. Logos is appealing to what one thinks. Pathos is appealing to what is in ones heart and Ethos is appealing to what one observes other people doing. The writer is often suggested to use one or more of these appeals to make their argument stronger and make it easier to convince the reader to your side. After this year in College Composition I am now very familiar with these categories and sub-categories upon these
types of writing.
I believe before this course I wasn't the strongest writer but now that I have completed this course I believe that my writing has some meaning behind it. When I was coming into this class I was expecting to be hit hard with loads of papers and topics to write about. Others thought it would be completely different. They thought it would be a fight to get the seats near their friends, or a period to drink seven Coca-Colas or a time to watch inappropriate Skittles commercials. Overall after having some fun we learned techniques, and strategies in order to be able to write a well developed paper. My expectations for this class exceeded what I expected it to be this year. When the course has "college" in the name I would have thought it would of been very rigorous with lots of writing and I would have no idea what was going on. I stayed up to date on the current type of
writing and became a successful writer.  I learned to connect with the reader better than I have ever been able to before. I did this by using appeals to the reader and sensory details to develop a dominant impression. By using these techniques for their respective papers I felt a bond
to the paper that I have never felt before. This bond was also felt by the reader as well because my emotion was put into this writing.
My papers throughout the year have improved tremendously. In the beginning of the year the topics I wrote about were very dry and boring. Towards the end of the year the writing that was produced was of much better quality. I believe the activity that helped me the most was studying the examples from the professional authors that were experts in that category. This helped me because I got to see the "ideal" way to write. Previous examples from past years have been other students and they didn't help out because most of the time we were writing about the same topic. I became tempted to steal their ideas and it created a block in my mind of how to write about the same topic. By using author's pieces, it helped me notice the techniques used to show the main topic or impression of the paper. Overall I have improved as a writer because of all these new techniques and strategies.
My two main improvements in writing this year were creating meaningful titles and writing hooking introduction paragraphs. In previous writing classes I was never taught a title could be the means of reading a paper or not. A title grabs the reader's attention and intrigues them to read the paper. Titles can be provocative where they have different meanings and makes the reader wonder what the paper is actually about. The title may also pose a question about the topic that may be interesting to the reader. The first paragraph the reader reads after the title is the introduction paragraph. The introduction paragraph is the most important part of the paper. It determines if the reader is interested in reading on or abandoning it. Other introductions I have written have been boring and had no attracting power to the reader. The introductions that were written this year were
much more in depth. They were  different because the thesis was not always at the end of the introduction. It was sometimes the very first line and sometimes not even in the introduction at all. This year helped me improve my ability to write a well developed
essay starting off with the title and then the introduction next.
This year in College Composition my writing has improved greatly. I learned the different types of writing such as narrative, expository, descriptive and persuasive. This following portfolio will show my improvement over the year because of this class.

3. Win From Within Rewrite-Descriptive

Win From Within

Lately I have been feeling very inspired when I see a Gatorade commercials. These commercials are very inspirational because one can see all the hard working athletes drinking Gatorade during or after their workout. The commercial “One More” is an excellent example of this because you see the football players sweating profusely and drinking Gatorade to replenish the liquids that they have lost. Sweat comes with hard work and people need to be inspired to work that hard. Gatorade shows that it inspires its consumers to drink it and work hard. When I see a Gatorade commercial I want to buy a Gatorade and go to the gym and work out. I see that the athletes in the commercial are very successful and Gatorade makes it seem that they are successful because they drink Gatorade. The practice in the commercial takes place in the morning. Not too many teenagers are motivated to get up early and work out. Gatorade inspires them to do so and make themselves better. The players are very excited right before the game and Gatorade proves that it inspires and motivates players to do their best. I get very inspired and pumped up just watching this commercial. It makes me want to drink this sports drink and go play some football.
The commercials that have the greatest impact on the people watching it are the non-fiction commercials. A great example of this is Michael Jordan drinking Gatorade during the NBA Finals. He had flu like symptoms but he still played an amazing game. The commercial shows him suffering and showing him completely drained of energy and exhausted. Michael Jordan drinks Gatorade and plays a game of his life. Gatorade gives him the power and energy to play the game. This commercial is inspiring because Michael Jordan, the best basketball player of all time, is exhausted with the flu and plays amazing to lead his game to victory. Gatorade shows some of the biggest athletes using its products. This becomes very inspirational to many younger athletes because they all want to be the best like Michael Jordan. If he is drinking Gatorade, little kids will want to drink Gatorade also to be like Michael Jordan
The most inspirational commercials that Gatorade has are the ones with two big stars competing in their sleep. It just shows that Gatorade is not only a drink but a tool for motivation to beat your opponent. In this commercial involving two of the most recognizable professional basketball players in today's world. One is Dwayne Wades and the other is Kevin Durant. Dwayne Wade is playing basketball against Kevin Durant. Dwayne Wade dribbles down the court and dunks over Durant. Kevin wakes up from a dream and is motivated to work even harder so he can switch who did what. The next scene of the commercial is Kevin Durant dunking over Wade. Then Wade wakes up from a dream and realizes he must work even harder so this doesn’t happen to him in real life. Gatorade shows that even pro athletes worry about losing and that they must work incredibly hard to beat their opponent. Drinking Gatorade shows that the best of the best athletes use/consume it to become the best. Many people are inspired by this because if the best athletes use their product then they want to use that product to become like them.
Another very inspirational commercial put out by Gatorade is the one where all-pro NFL linebacker, Ray Lewis, is drinking it at the end of the scene and is very successful in the game that he was currently playing. It shows all the football tools necessary to be successful to win. It shows an old sign to the entrance of a football field, some rotten wooden bleachers, a decrepit basketball hoop, an old scoreboard, a rusted out field goal post, torn up field, a beat up blocking sled, a weight room showing a bench press machine. Then it asks “Is it in you?” This commercial shows that you do not have to have the best equipment to be the best and drink the best drink in the game.
Gatorade make people dig deep and give the energy to take care of the small things and win, win from within. Is it in you? Can you win from within?

However commercials that are very inspiring are the ones that are non-fiction about a real life person, not a made up person. A great example of this is Michael Jordan drinking Gatorade during the NBA Finals. He had flu like symptoms but he still played an amazing game. Then it asks “Is it in you~?” Gatorade asks this question to see if you have the power to use all these tools necessary to be successful in the sports that Gatorade is used in. Gatorade inspires people to drink their beverage to get motivated to work out, go to practice and eventually play in games, or as Gatorade says, win games.

Gatorade makes people dig deep and give the energy to take care of the small things and win, Win from within. Is it in you? Can you win from within?

5. The Good, The Bad, The Lanyard-Descriptive

The Good, The Bad the Lanyard

The lanyard is “any of various small cords or ropes for securing or suspending something, as a whistle about the neck or a knife from one's belt.” Today this fashion has transformed to hang from people’s pockets attached to their keys. In today’s day and life it is more of a fashion statement rather that a use. Back in history they had a very significant use. Lanyards can come in many different colors, sizes as well as sporting teams that put their logo on them. They can also be used as advertising to get teams name out to the public. Many stereotypes are associated with lanyards. Most of the people who wear lanyards are generally men that are athletes. Lanyards are a fashion statement of this generation that can be considered a fad but is a favorite of many male athletes in this world.

The first lanyard in history recorded was in the fifteenth century in France. The word originated from the French word "Lanière”. A "Lanière” is a strap or thong apparatus. The French Military used these lanyards to secure whistles around their neck for direction and later they used it for securing an extra pistol around their waist or neck. The French used these lanyards to secure the object from getting lost. Lanyards were often used at sea in the navy as well as on the battlefield. Later lanyards became more of a decorative piece. They were used in some very famous movies including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. One of the main characters used a lanyard because he stated it was too difficult to holster a gun without looking which was done many times in the movie. Lanyards are also used in today’s military to decipher the position of the officer. The different colors of the lanyards show the different ranks. Lanyards are not a new item, however many people are adopting this accessory as a fashion statement.

The people who use lanyards generally are stereotyped as an athlete or a freshman in college because they wear their I.D. card around their neck. These stereotypes aren’t bad but they are the first thing someone thinks of when they think of lanyards. Sometimes thieves like lanyards because if they see a person step out of an expensive car, it gives them a rope to snatch the keys out of their pocket.

Lanyards are becoming more of a unisex fad. They come in many different designs and patters to match any girl’s personality or style. Females tend to attach their wallets, I.D. cards or other personal belongings to them. This is a problem because of thieves. They see an "easy target" and become their next victim. The thief walks past the female and latches on to their lanyard and steals their personal belongings connected to it. However, in contrast to this issue, lanyards can also be a security issue. Many people wear them around their neck and keep identification cards, money, credit cards and other valuables close to their body. This is often a tactic used in foreign countries to keep passports around their neck so their identities cannot be stolen overseas.  Lanyards serve many good purposes but can also cause the wearer to be a target to thieves.

Although both males and females use lanyards, only certain groups of both genders use them. Usually athletes and coaches wear them representing their favorite team or the team they play on or coach themselves. Other people that wear them are teens that are first time drivers. They don't want to lose their keys, so they put in on a lanyard so they are more easily noticed and found. Teachers are also a group of people who wear lanyards because of the breakaway safety. They need to have their badge on them but they don't want it to become a rope tied around their neck if a student grasps onto in and chokes them. They wear the lanyards for the looks but only the ones with this safety factor build into them. The last groups of people that wear them are members or retired member of the military. Lanyards are very common because of their original use as a lanyard on a handgun. It is the easiest way to access a handgun and they just take that use over to their keys. Lanyards originated as a product with one use but they have been transformed to have many different uses.

Lanyards are very popular for both genders and for all ages. Many different people wear them. They come with some half true stereotypes. The lanyards today have many different designs and patters to be appealing to everyone. Lanyards originated as a military use. Although they are still used in the military they have a use for everyone. Lanyards can be very handy but they can also be a danger when it comes to thieves. Everyone could have a lanyard if they choose to have one; there is a lanyard for everyone.

6. Football VS Lacrosse-Compare VS Contrast

Point by Point

Topic: Football vs Lacrosse

Thesis: Football is a contact sport trying to score, lacrosse is a scoring sport with contact.

In football people go crazy over a big hit or stop. In lacrosse people go nuts over a sweet goal. Football wears equipment on their entire body. Lacrosse only wears equipment on their upper body. Football is played with their hands. Lacrosse carries around a stick to handle the ball with. To score in football one must get to a certain area of the field. To score in lacrosse one must shoot the ball into a six by six foot goal protected by a goalie.

Topic: Siblings

Thesis: Although my sister and I are very athletic, we play very different sports.

My sister is built like an athlete. She ran track as well as played field hockey. These two sports include conditioning and eye hand coordination. To play sports of this kind one must have a lot of skill in a certain type of area. Field hockey isn’t like track but they both need special skill to play and it needs an athlete to play them.

I also have the athletic body type, however I play two completely different sports. The sports that play take a different type of athlete but they still take a very demanding person. These two sports can be very difficult on ones body.

7.Papaisms- Descriptive

Papaisms

The little phrases, sayings and quotes that my Grandpa or Papa and my Dad use as a part of their personality. Whenever there is an opportunity to say something funny or use one of these family clichés, my dad jumps on the opportunity. These sayings all have underlying messages whether they are obvious or they make one think. Papaisms are a part of my family’s life and after my Papa. These phrases always make and appearance at sporting events, when my dad and I are fishing or camping or just in everyday life. There is always one for everything.

“Your mouth is moving faster than a whippoorwill’s ass” This papaism is a family favorite and it is the most commonly used in life. A whippoorwill is a small bird that lives in the northern and central America. When it flies its backside moves rather quickly. This quote means when someone is in trouble and they try and talk their way out of it. When a guilty person tries to talk their way out of it their lips start to quiver. I have heard this phrase many times directed towards me or directed at other people. I get a better meaning out of it when it’s directed towards others because I can witness why it is being said. A life lesson that is learned from this is that always tell the truth. This is very important because my dad is a role model to me but in a different way than other ways.

“You don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground” A saying originating from my Papa. He was a very strict father to my dad, aunt and uncles. He always said they weren’t as good as they thought they were. They probably weren’t anyways. My dad always tells me stories of them breaking stuff and doing things that would be considered bad in today’s society. A story my dad has told me many times before is that his brother, my uncle, received a toy bazooka for Christmas. They started shooting valuables including old records, vintage Italian Christmas ordainments and glass dolls. If they weren’t hit with the bazooka they would break on the ground. When my Papa got home he brought my dad and his brother to an orphanage and pretended like he was going to drop them off. As they got out of the car in tears he drove around the block and picked them back up and told them this papaism. They learned their lessons and stopped being bad for the week, then started acting up again. This papaism teaches me that nobody is above the rules of the house or society.

“Ass over teakettle.” This papaism comes out mostly during sports especially during football. Almost all the males in my dad’s side of the family played football at one point in their life. My dad and uncle played at Coe College in Iowa, my other uncle played in high school and my Papa played in the Navy. There are pictures of him running the ball against the New York Giants when the Navy played them for a preseason game. This quote means that someone gets hit so hard their backside goes over their head, they do a flip. I have both had that papaism aimed at me and it aimed towards someone else as a result of my hit. This quote can also be used in non-sports related things. If someone falls and does a flip this papaism is bound to make an appearance. This papaism teaches me that I should always protect myself if I am playing football or just in everyday life. I learned this lesson because it is embarrassing to get hit “ass over teakettle” but the hit itself doesn’t usually hurt as bad as the shame does.

All these papaism plus many more have taught me many lessons in my life as well as having a big influence on my life. All my uncles, aunts’ grandparents and parents have taught me valuable lessons in life. I am taught these lessons in a different way than most people, but I kind of like it. It is a unique way to teach someone lessons either by embarrassment, making and example or stating that you are in charge around the house or in society. I love my family and all the ways they teach me to grow up and be a man.
